Havaianas were created in Brazil in 1962; Havaianas were aptly named after Hawaii, a popular vacation destination at the time. The product was inspired in the traditional Japanese ‘Zori’ sandals, which have soles made of rice straw and ‘V’ shaped straps. Havaianas replaced the straw with premium Brazilian rubber, updated the design to look fashionable, and the rest is history! This is why the soles of Havaianas feature a rice grain print; one of the many design details that make Havaianas unique.
Traveling salesmen would then sell Havaianas directly from their vintage Volkswagen Combi vans throughout Brazil. The vans were always greeted with excitement! By 1964 practically every worker in Brazil wore a pair of Havaianas.
Originally, Havaianas were only available in one style, the “Traditional “style with a blue and white sole being the most well- known. An unintentional manufacturing error , which led to a new green style being produced and hitting the market, Havaianas started expanding the range to different colorways like black, yellow and pink.
Havaianas invented the original rubber thong and here is our proof! Havaianas’ parent company, Alpargatas, registered the patent in 1966 of our now world famous rubber thong!
Nowadays the unique and patented footwear brand has become synonymous with long lasting comfort and perfectly expresses the joy, energy and fun of the Brazilian summer spirit.
The Brazilian Government included Havaianas on a list of fundamental products (alongside rice and beans!) to control inflation. Havaianas was now recognized as an intrinsic part of Brazilians lives. By this point, millions of pairs of Havaianas were being sold each year in Brazil.
In the mid ‘90s, Havaianas’ kept on expanding its product range: After observing young consumers “customizing” their slippers by inverting the soles so that the straps and sole were the same color; the brand decided to launched ‘Havaianas Top’, monochrome slippers initially available in 8 color’s
Continuing the momentum in the ’90 Havaianas launched new styles with printed patterns. Havaianas Floral was launched with hibiscus flower – the first of many printed Havaianas
The ‘98 World Cup title wasn’t ours, but was a game changer for Havaianas forever. To celebrate the ’98 World Cup Havaianas launched “Havaianas Brazil” – a style with a small Brazilian flag on the strap. This model soon became an object of desire abroad and it also became Brazilians’ pride.
The traditional rubber slippers surprised the world when they were worn by Jean Paul Gaultier styles on the runway during his fashion show in Paris. Havaianas have also developed trend-setting styles with high visibility collaborations like Missoni, Valentino, British designer Charlotte Olympia or licenses including Disney, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.
Havaianas released the first ever glow in the dark thongs! As a light hearted nod to concern over the Millennium Bug
Havaianas further develops the range by releasing a special collection of thongs with fine details, such as crystals and metal meshes, which are still to this day hand-sewn by artisans in Northeast Brazil.
Since 2003 Havaianas has been part of the Oscars, with the latest models given to all nominees.
The IPÊ-branded Havaianas help protect brazilian forest and endangered species researched at the Institute.The endangered species are depicted on the soles, also helping educate consumers on environmental issues.Through this creation of customised flip-flop, Havaianas donates 7% of teh sales directly to IPÊ
Adding a more feminine silhouette to the range the Slim family was created.With a thinnner and more dedicated strap, women everywhere immediately fall in love with thsi time less style
Havaianas enters the Guinness World Record Books In Australia for the most amount of people floating in a line (on our famous thong lilos!). More than 2,000 people gathered on Cottesloe Beach (Western Australia) to claim the record and raise funds for beach-side social projects. We still hold the record to this day!
Havaianas make footprint in United States opens office in New York, Soho
Havaianas opens in style with its EMEA market in Spain. Today there are office is Portugal, France, Italy, Germany & Greece
While Brazilians enjoy warm weather all year round and can wear Havaianas, other countries are not as fortunate. Ensuring the Havaianas always summer spirit is also present in the autumn , Havaianas launched the Soul Collection – a range of casual sneakers and espadrilles with the traditional and much loved “Havaianas soul” incorporated into the sole of the shoes.
Havaianas launched a magical new partnership with Disney, featuring everyone’s favourite Disney characters Micky & Mini on the sole of thongs
Havaianas celebrated its 50th birthday! We produced a commemorative limited-edition style with proceeds from sales donated to UNICEF
In 2018, Havaianas made its runway debut at New York Fashion Week! Following the resurgence in popularity of Havaianas amongst influencers and editors attending fashion shows throughout Europe, luxury Australian designer Dion Lee sent models down his runway in Havaianas as he presented his Spring 19 Collection in Soho.
Havaianas collaborate with French Luxury powerhouse, Saint Laurent, for a limited-edition release of co-branded thongs.
